Honda Pilot
The Pilot has taken many forms over the years. The boxy shape of the original gave way to a more rounded version, followed by a more recent return to its more squared-off roots.
If you want to get tougher still, there’s always the Trailsport version with it’s off-road spec tires, fender cladding, special interior colouring and unique badging. Or, go the other way and select the all-new and stealthy Black Edition.
All Pilots come standard with a 3.5L V6 good for 285 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, fed to all four wheels via a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission and three rows of seating.
Hyundai Santa Fe
The latest Santa Fe is a year into its lifecycle and its boxy styling still makes a very unique impression on the roads. Bonus styling points go to the subtle (actually, some say not so subtle) “H” appliques found throughout the body and cabin; the DRLs, the taillights, the grille – even the seat stitching are all designed to recall that ever-present first letter of the brand’s name.
The boxy styling also makes for a nicely roomy interior and more space than you might expect from this segment; it’s especially notable in the third row. Add a couple of engine choices that include a hybrid and turbo, an interior with neat bits like a digital dash and dual wireless charge pads and you have a proper contender in the segment.
